The New Zealand Curriculum: Where Students Need Permission to be Creative

The New Zealand Curriculum has continuously neglected the role of creativity within education. It claims to prepare young New Zealanders for the future, but it has failed to extend their ability to think creatively and develop thoughtful ideas. The pressure of the ever-changing workplace has led to a curriculum focused on individual academic results, rather than one that values and supports the ability to be truly creative.

Through completing a literature review and interviews with both students and teachers, I aimed to gain an understanding of the journey of creative students through the New Zealand Education System. This publication follows the creative journey of students through education. This project aimed to provoke a conversation about why creativity is not valued within the classroom.
